Problems with Meditation: Kundalini

September 28th, 2007

Dear Puran & Susanna,
I have been practicing Heart Rhythm Meditation for about a year, and have been getting good results. However, over the last 3 months I have been having trouble with uncontrollable convulsions. It happens during Earth Breath and Fire Breath, but mostly during Fire. It does not always happen, and most of the time I am aware. Please let me know if this is something that I should worry about, or how to deal with it.
With love Ron

Dear Ron,
It sounds like you’re having Kundalini symptoms within the range that is not yet dangerous. Some people like the body-shaking experiences they get from Kundalini. I can remember thinking, “Ah, now something is really happening so I must be really meditating!” But I would discourage it — you can make better use of the energy than letting it shake your body.

Since this happens primarily during the Fire Breath, which intensifies the energy going up the spine, you can always control these shakes by either stopping the Fire Breath or by doing the Water Breath, which intensifies the descending energy in the spine and shuts down the Kundalini.

Beyond controlling the experience, what could you use it for? Kundalini is energy, and we need energy in our hearts. So instead of letting the energy rise up your spine, stop it in the heart and hold it there as you hold your breath. Then exhale from your heart in a forward direction and send your heart’s radiance forward like the sun.

While you do that, imagine a situation in your life where you need to be courageous, or charismatic, or loving, or an agent of healing and harmony. Put yourself into that situation as you breathe out, and see how you would behave with this energy in your heart.

But don’t go on letting the Kundalini shake you. It indicates that your chakras are not able to handle the energy that is running through them. They could be damaged, causing psychotic symptoms. Build up the chakras one at a time, starting with the heart.

With love,

Puran
