Question about the color of the heart chakra

October 24th, 2007

Dear Puran,Looking at the colours chosen for the heart chakra, some Eastern religions use the colour green, while the one recommended by Sufi’s ( I got this from sufiorder.org) is gold. Is there any difference in using the colour gold for the heart chakra? My view is that since the chakras follow the colours of the rainbow, starting with red and ending with violet, each corresponding to the 7 chakras, why (or from where?) is the colour gold used for the heart chakra?Thank you for your time.

Wassalaam, Sameer

Dear Sameer,

As you can see from the following spectrum, the gold color is just below the green.

Spectrum

The Sufis define the heart center as extending from the solar plexus up to the collarbone. So a range of colors could be used depending on where one is aiming. The depth of the heart is especially important, as it reflects the soul.
Experientially, meditation on the heart produces a radiance in the heart that is like a sun, which is gold in color. Thinking of the heart as golden is conducive to discovering the sun within. Think of the saying “a heart of gold” and what that conveys that would be lost if we said “a heart of jade” or “a heart of emerald”. The latter sayings are beautiful, but do not quite convey the warmth and power of the color gold.
Are you interested in feeling your heart as a sun?
Love to you,
Puran
