Developing concentration

October 25th, 2007

Is it possible for a lay person to bring instantaneous concentration within a few moments? I’m a student who has alot of noise in my mind. To stop this noise I need to concentrate. I will be giving a lot of examinations in the coming months which will decide my future. These tests are reasoning tests and i need to apply my full concentration for a long period of about 3 hours. Which ways can I try to achieve full concentration????  thanks, student

Dear Student,

Concentration of the mind is achieved by practice, similar to exercise of the body.
It is easiest to concentrate on something you love. Don’t make it harder by trying to concentrate on something you don’t care about. You develop concentration by deepening your love for the subject.
I recommend concentrating on your heartbeat. You can do it anywhere. Since it’s your very own sensation, it is something personal, and therefor more interesting than something outside of yourself.
Remember why you’re taking these tests and how much you love to solve puzzles. Your heart can do what your mind cannot.
There is more in Energize Your Heart on developing concentration.
Enjoy your topic!

love,

Puran

To expand just a bit more on Puran’s comments about love, remember what you love about your plans, hopes and dreams about your future. Then realize that these tests and the individual questions within each of these tests are simply part of your plans, hopes and dreams rather than seeing them as obstacles to your future. With that realization, you will find it easier to embrace and love these tests as part of the pathway to your dreams.

Worry has been described as meditation on a poor outcome. Considering the power of meditation, rather than worrying about the possibility of failure, it would be much more helpful toward increasing your power of concentration to meditate on your success in these tests. Best wishes.
