Question about allergies

November 12th, 2007

Dear Puran:
I have pre-ordered Energize Your Heart and look forward to reading it.
I have been trying to sustain a HRM practice but find it difficult to sit in meditation during allergy season whether it be due to distraction from a runny nose or just simply not being able to breath due to nasal congestion.
I have a multipart question regarding this.
1. Do you have any suggestions for how to practice when these types of symptoms exist?
2. Is it possible to utilize the HRM in some way to alleviate the symptoms?
3. I have read a theory that allergies are the immune system overreacting to stimuli that it doesn’t really need to be reacting to and that this could be due to an emotional issue from the past. Per this theory, clearing the emotional issue allows the immune system not to be so overprotective and therefore not overreacting. If this is true, would it be possible to use HRM in some way to cure allergies at the root emotional level?
Best regards,
Alan

Dear Alan,

I have many allergies as well, so I understand and empathize with your concerns. Here’s what I have done. First, cleanse the nasal passages by inhaling some warm salt water. (Here’s a brief article on nasal irrigation) Second, in your meditation, make a concerted effort to breathe through your nose even if there is congestion. See if you can free up one nostril. I’ve found that when I ask my body to breathe, the congestion progressively lessens until breathing normally is possible. If this doesn’t work, try breathing through the mouth for a while, either in and out through the mouth (the air breath) or in the mouth and out the nose (the fire breath). One of these practices may clear out your nasal passages.

Breathing deeply and rhythmically is helpful for all aspects of health. I think allergies are certainly a reaction, an over-sensitivity of the immune system to external material that is not really harmful. In my case, my allergies were exacerbated by years of upward meditation in which my goal was to leave my body, mind, heart, and all that is limited behind in pursuit of oneness. Later, I learned that transcendence is not only unnecessary to achieve this state, it is often harmful to the body, mind, and heart.

I’ve had success healing myself from extreme allergic reactions using Heart Rhythm Meditation. It is an advanced technique, and it relies upon the ability to draw energy into your heart, and into the Universal Heart, where the energy is re-circulated, assimilated, harmonized, and returned to you in a form that is suited to your needs. This same method can be used to heal others, and we call it “healing by absorption”.

love,

Puran
