Question about the pulse

December 14th, 2007

Bright Blessings to all!
I recently attended an IAM lecture in Bloomington, Indiana. I would first of all love to express my appreciate for the opportunity to attend. I was very glad that I went, as I feel I got a lot of really good information from it which I believe has already helped me with my meditations. A lot of what Susanna and Puran talked about was in very close harmony with what I have been doing myself as far as focusing on the spirit of oneness and the love in my heart which connects us all together.
I am very curious about something that was said that night. Puran was talking about working to learn to find your pulse somewhere in your body. I was very surprised, because as long as I can remember, I have felt my pulse coursing through my whole body with every heartbeat. I asked my therapist today if he feels that same thing, as he has studied and taught yoga and practiced meditation for much of his life, but he said that he didn’t. Although I have been extremely interested in meditation since I was very young, and feel that I have been given a wonderful gift of being able to meditate fairly easily, I am definitely not what I would consider to be a seasoned meditator. Does it seem odd that I can feel this pulse in my whole body? Can you advise me as to what this might possibly mean for me as far as my spiritual growth and learning to practice Heart Rhythm Meditation? I told my therapist that it really didn’t seem to mean much to me, as I don’t know how it may affect a person who practices HRM. I do know that I have been very interested lately in heart meditation, even before I learned about this institute and heard the lecture by Puran & Susanna. I prefer to focus on my heart and the spirit of love that connects every one of us together. I also have a very deep desire to help others in my life, as I am an adult abuse survivor and I know how badly abuse can damage your innate ability to trust and connect with others on many different levels if the survivor doesn’t have the tools that he/she needs.
Thank you so very much for reading my question(s), and I look forward to any/all responses and ideas that might be offered.
Take care & be well, all!
Sharon Brown

Dear Sharon,
There are many people who would consider your ability to feel your pulse everywhere as a great gift, as they struggle to feel any pulse anywhere. So you have a head-start. With practice, anyone can learn to feel their pulse throughout their body. This may take a year, or a moment. However long it takes, it is a vital skill, opening the way to inner awareness of the heart and the heart’s magnetic field. (Here’s a link to a company, Hitachi, which has developed a new way to measure the heart’s magnetic field, and another link, about new research which has produced a very small magnetometer)

Being aware of the magnetic field is a milestone on this path. How do we find the magnetic field of the heart? By using what we know about it: it pulsates with the heartbeat, and expands and contracts as you breathe. So when you discover a sensation that permeates the whole body, not localized to one part, and that throbs with the heartbeat, you’ve located the magnetic field.
Now you can expand your magnetic field as you breathe out, to reach out to people around you, and even beyond your sight. Just be sure that your breath length is the same number of heartbeats in and out so that your breath is entrained with your heart and your magnetism will then carry powerful waves of peace.
With love,
Puran

    Dear Sharon,

For as far back as I can remember, I have been able to feel my pulse anywhere I choose to pay attention to it in my body. I have never found this to be any kind of hindrance in my Heart Rhythm work - only a great gift, as Puran put it. In fact, I remember experimenting with my breath and my pulse as a kid and noticing the change in my pulse rate that coordinated with whether I was inhaling or exhaling or holding. Little did I know, then, that I was already ‘practicing’ for my HRM work which only came several decades later.

At a very young age, I was also sometimes aware of a ’strange sensation’ of being ‘bigger than myself’ in a very physical sort of way although I had no ideal what I was experiencing until it became clear to me through my HRM work that I was sensing my magnetic self. Those sensations had actually diminished over the years and I had sort of forgotten about them, but they and my memories of them quickly came back as I started doing HRM. The sensation I currently usually have of my magnetic body or magnetic field is different from what I experienced as a child but I can still experience it as I did long ago if I choose to do so. Either way, I simply see it as yet another gift given to me to work with and I try to make the most of it.

How does spirituality and Christianity play a role in this practice? It scares me to dive into this fully because I believe in Jesus Christ and his divine power.

    Dear Brenda,
I celebrate and share your belief in Christ. Heart Rhythm Meditation has its roots in Christianity (and Sufism). See our page on the history of HRM for more. Basically, there is no conflict between the belief in Christ and the desire to open your heart. Where is your faith held, if not your heart?
    God bless you.
    Puran
