Dizziness and blurred vision

January 22nd, 2008

I am very confused and require some help.
I started meditating a few days ago and found that I have a little heaviness in the body and problems with vision such as minor blurriness. I believe it is as a result of the mental state I am in. I really don’t know what to do. Should I stop meditating and will it go away? Or should I try something else. When I try focusing on my breathing, it causes me to become dizzy. I don’t know what is happening.
Thanks for the help.
Regards,
David

Dear David,
Please tell me what you do when you meditate, and try to describe the mental state you’re in.
Dizziness and visual blurriness can be caused by too much oxygen - you may be breathing too fast. But breathing slowly is not necessarily the answer; you need to breathe a full breath.

Our general recommendation is that you concentrate your attention on your heart, and make your breathing deep, conscious, and rhythmic. Pay attention to your heartbeat and coordinate your heartbeat with your breath: 8 beats in, 8 beats out.

Breath is a powerful tool. Until we get this figured out, I would definitely recommend that you stop meditating. With the proper technique for your nervous system, you could get tremendous benefits from meditation. But you need to have your practice “fitted” to you, like a pair of shoes, so you don’t get a blister.

I’ll be glad to help.
With love,

Puran
