Halloween

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Halloween is a day that marks the fullness of the harvest and the turning toward winter. It is a day that often represents transformation, seen in the wearing of costumes, symbolizing the the bringing out of a different side of oneself than one normally shows the world.

Greatness

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

Each one of us has a heart filled with greatness. Yet we often cannot see it, because we get impressed by our mistakes, flaws, and limitations. We are so aware of our shortcomings that we overlook the greatness that underlies our limitations.

Nice post on genetic determinism

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Deepak Chopra has written a nice blog entry on Intent Blog on the idea that everything in a person’s life is reducible to the person’s genetic code.

It is a bit surprising that Dr. Chopra includes in his post a rather controversial idea (especially for one trained in Western medicine): “Genes are affected by the environment, including upbringing and behavior.”

In biology, the notion that non-genetic traits obtained through a given environment can be passed on is associated with Lamark, and is called ’soft inheritance’. It is a sort of heresy in biology. Here is an interesting article about a researcher who provides some evidence for soft inheritance.

Our interest is in the development of the heart. A wonderful quality of the heart is that it constantly seeks development, constantly longs to move forward, toward love, harmony, and beauty; toward the perfection of its qualities. And this is true regardless of what has been given by one’s genetic inheritance.

Question about the Fire Breath and sexual desire

Friday, October 26th, 2007
Dear Puran.
I have been practicing the heart meditation on my own for a while and I’m having a great experience. One day I could see a heart beating in every object and element around me. Thank you for sharing such a great way to find our unity .
My problem is, each time I do the fire breath I feel heat in my body, which I understand. Sometimes I feel my head very heavy which is OK. But my concern is that lately I’ve been having an increase in my sexual desire immediately after the meditation and sometimes during the meditation. Is this a normal feeling? Or am I doing something wrong to attract negative energy around me? Most of the time I feel close to Light, to God ,to LOVE during the meditation. I worry because my intention is pure but why is this happening?
Please reply.
With Love
Nour

Developing concentration

Thursday, October 25th, 2007
Is it possible for a lay person to bring instantaneous concentration within a few moments? I’m a student who has alot of noise in my mind. To stop this noise I need to concentrate. I will be giving a lot of examinations in the coming months which will decide my future. These tests are reasoning tests and i need to apply my full concentration for a long period of about 3 hours. Which ways can I try to achieve full concentration????  thanks, student

Question about drugs for depression and bi-polar disorder

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007
Hi Puran…
I have been having a dialogue with some people about this subject and I am very interested in your opinion.

What do you think about the use of psychotropic drugs in the treatment of depression and bi-polar disorder?

Thanks for listening!

Question about the color of the heart chakra

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007
Dear Puran,Looking at the colours chosen for the heart chakra, some Eastern religions use the colour green, while the one recommended by Sufi’s ( I got this from sufiorder.org) is gold. Is there any difference in using the colour gold for the heart chakra? My view is that since the chakras follow the colours of the rainbow, starting with red and ending with violet, each corresponding to the 7 chakras, why (or from where?) is the colour gold used for the heart chakra?Thank you for your time.

Heart Rate Variability and Heart Rhythm Meditation

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2007

One of the developments in medicine and biofeedback that we’re excited about is the study of Heart Rhythm Variability (HRV); HRV is a measure of the minute differences in time between the beats of your heart. While your heart rate measures the average number of times your heart beats per minute, HRV measures change in the time between beats. HRV is one of the hottest areas of health and biofeedback research because studies have found that a low HRV is an important leading indicator of heart disease.[1] Heart Rhythm Meditation is a very effective way known to increase HRV.
The pattern of your HRV also shows the state of your emotional-energetic heart. The below graph shows the HRV of a subject who experienced 4 periods of emotional distress (a, b, c, and d), due to being asked about a stressful subject (his finances).

Gender and stress

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

This is a very exciting article which we already know instinctively, but here it is demonstrated through science. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do and nurture your friendships even more.

http://www.anapsid.org/cnd/gender/tendfend.html

The article basically says that men and women respond to stress in different ways, and that relating to friends releases the hormone Oxytocin (sometimes called “the love hormone”) in women, though not in men, because men release more testosterone when under stress, which combats the effect of Oxytocin. The study reminds us not to compromise our relationships when under stress - that’s the time we need them the most!

The Dip

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

This is an interesting blog by Seth Godin, author of “The Dip”, a book about how to be “the best in the world”.

I admire his creativity and tenacity, and his focus on honest assessment of how important a goal really is to you, and what you’re willing to sacrifice. This book is really about the forward dimension of the heart.
